History was nearly made at Gaelic Park, but Leitrim finished with a flourish to secure a dramatic victory.

Trailing by three points in the second period of extra-time Leitrim came thundering back to set up a provincial semi-final clash against Roscommon.

A blistering start including a goal from homegrown player Shane Hogan put New York into a 1-4 to 0-1 advantage. Leitrim responded by scoring eight of the next nine points in the first half to lead by 0-9 to 1-5 at the interval.

It was equally tight after the restart with the teams eventually finishing level, 1-12 to 0-15. Extra-time was required with Kevin O’Grady and Jamie Clarke rifling over splendid points for New York, who edged three clear.

Aidan Flynn and substitute Ronan Kennedy replied for Leitrim to leave the minimum between the teams in the closing stages.

Shane Quinn supplied the levelling score before Noel Plunkett’s last gasp winner.
