Last weekend represented the final u14 academy day for this year.
This was the second year where we ran a combination of seven a-side and fifteen a-side days at this age group.
The seven a-side days in particular have been a worthwhile initiative which apply the findings of existing small-sided game and games-based approach research on a larger scale. Between 320-360 players partake in 6 x 10-minute seven a-side games on each of these days, allowing counties to give more players an opportunity to play inter-county standard games.
Additionally, the reduced player numbers facilitate greater involvement for each player, more touches on the ball and more decisions to be made along with a substantial physical conditioning benefit!
A big mention must go to the staff and coaches in each county for the help they provide on these days, making them a rewarding experience for all involved.
Finishing the U14 academy year with 15 a-side games still gives players and coaches the opportunity to showcase everything they’ve worked on in training in a more competition-like scenario.
