Today marks a major milestone for Connacht GAA as the University of Galway Connacht GAA AirDome has been successfully re-inflated, 495 days after the devastating impact of Storm Éowyn.

This achievement follows months of extensive planning, collaboration and reconstruction work. Connacht GAA would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Tobin Engineers, Prunty Pitches and DBS Engineering, whose professionalism, expertise and commitment delivered the project to the highest standards from start to finish.
We would also like to thank our valued sponsors, particularly our naming rights partner, University of Galway, whose loyalty and continued support throughout this period has been greatly appreciated.

The most frequently asked question always is: “What is different about the new AirDome?”
Firstly, the replacement structure has a resilient fabric system and has been specifically designed to allow for rapid deflation should severe weather be forecast. In addition, floodlighting will now be pitch-mounted rather than roof-mounted, further enhancing the facility’s ability to respond to adverse weather conditions.

While the AirDome structure is now fully erected, a number of final works remain, particularly in relation to utilities and operational readiness.
A series of meetings will take place over the coming days to determine a reopening schedule. Once arrangements have been finalised, updates will be communicated through Connacht GAA’s official channels. Subject to completion of the remaining works, it is anticipated that bookings will recommence during July.

Finally, Connacht GAA wishes to acknowledge and thank the many people, both within and beyond the GAA community, who offered support, encouragement and goodwill following the storm.
The positive messages received in the days and months after Storm Eowyn provided tremendous reassurance during a challenging period.
Since opening in Dec ’21, the University of Galway Connacht GAA AirDome has become an iconic landmark for the province and beyond. We are excited to begin its next chapter and look forward to welcoming players, clubs, schools and supporters back through our doors in the weeks ahead!
