RIP Gerry McGovern Former Chairperson of the Connacht Council

It is with profound sadness and deep regret that Connacht GAA have learned of the loss of former Chairperson of the Connacht Council Gerry McGovern. We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to Gerry’s loving wife Kathleen and his children Ciarán, Gavin and Jacinta.

Gerry served as Connacht Council Chairperson from 2018 to 2021 and it was during his tenure that the University of Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome was opened. Prior to this he had served as Vice Chairperson from 2015-2018 and as the Leitrim delegate on the council for many years leading up to this. Gerry dedicated a huge portion of his life to the GAA, winning a county championship with his beloved Cloone in 1980 before becoming a distinguished referee after his playing days, officiating in County Finals and also at intercounty level. He held a multitude of officer roles at all levels of the association for his club, his county aswell as his provinicial council and various national committetes. As county Chairperson Gerry oversaw huge projects in Leitrim GAA including the development of the Leitrim COE and the redevelopment of Páirc Seán MacDiarmada. Gerry continued to be actively involved in the GAA right up until he passed and was the acting County Safety and Facilities Officer.

Every role that Gerry undertook in his lifetime of service to the GAA he carried out with diligence, dignity and respect for everyone he dealt with. He was a GAA man to his fingertips and was extremely popular with everybody he came across. The infrastructure projects he was so heavily involved in such as the Connacht GAA AirDome, the Leitrim GAA COE at Annaduff and the redeveloped Páirc Seán MacDiarmada are part of the wonderful legacy he leaves behind him. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
