The coaching team needs to have a mix of people in their ranks to accomplish the above needs of the players. Therefore, not everyone needs to be a ‘coach’. Desirable individual characteristics are preferred:
-Communications efficient (sending out information, talking to parents, talking to other club coaches for games etc.)
-Observant (Can watch from afar to watch enjoyment levels, interaction among players, lack of involvement etc.)
-Organised (efficient at booking pitches, ordering equipment etc)
-Patient and caring (Can deal with upset children and small injuries that occur)
Technical (Can spot and fix and see skill issues players are struggling with.)
The make of the team at youth level is extremely important and development focused coaches with the following characteristics are desirable:
For your club to see the long-term benefit of underage coaching, the coaches you allow work with your teams will have a major influence. Make sure you get people involved who are interested in development before trophies, people before plaudits and long-term success before short term personal gain.
