Coaching Team Makeup

Purpose of coaching team

• To improve all players in the panel [3 Ts and 3 Ps]
• To help all players reach their potential
• To give each player confidence in themselves
• To build a team
• To inspire players to be the best they can be

Child coaching team

The coaching team needs to have a mix of people in their ranks to accomplish the above needs of the players. Therefore, not everyone needs to be a ‘coach’. Desirable individual characteristics are preferred:

-Communications efficient (sending out information, talking to parents, talking to other club coaches for games etc.)

-Observant (Can watch from afar to watch enjoyment levels, interaction among players, lack of involvement etc.)

-Organised (efficient at booking pitches, ordering equipment etc)

-Patient and caring (Can deal with upset children and small injuries that occur)

Technical (Can spot and fix and see skill issues players are struggling with.)

Youth coaching team

The make of the team at youth level is extremely important and development focused coaches with the following characteristics are desirable:

• Interactive (Good and asking relevant and specific questions on areas being covered within sessions)
• Adaptable (Can judge the mood of a group or numbers that attend a session and can change the structure of session quickly to meet the needs)
• Technical (Can spot and fix and see skill issues players are struggling with)
• Organised (Has session planned for coaching team and delegated so everyone knows role of coaching team within session)
• Tech Savy (Has a good knowledge of supports in technology that can enhance and support coaching team)
• Communications efficient (sending out information, talking to parents, talking to other club coaches for games etc.)

For your club to see the long-term benefit of underage coaching, the coaches you allow work with your teams will have a major influence. Make sure you get people involved who are interested in development before trophies, people before plaudits and long-term success before short term personal gain.
