The 1990’s
Comhairle Chonnacht faced the 1990’s conscious of the need to keep up the momentum generated during the previous decade in the many facets of the Associations’s activities, particularly in relation to coaching and the on-going development of club and county grounds.
The council embarked on a scheme of ground development at Dr Hyde park, Roscommon and McHale Park, Castlebar. New selling points were installed at Hyde park for admission to sideline and terraces, and the developments worked very well on the occasion of Connacht finals. A more ambitious project was undertaken at McHale park where new walls, incorporating covered selling points and entrances, were built at both ends of the grounds.
The nineties will always be remembered for the decade that the Sam Maguire finally headed West again, in a brilliant display Galway denied the Lilywhites in 1998 in a game that will always be remembered for the dashing style of the Galway forwards in the second half.
In 1994 the Leitrim footballers also played their part, the final whistle that greeted Leitrim’s first Connacht final win sinnce 1927 was the signal for an explosion of enthusiasm that had to be seen to be believed. Nobody, not even in defeated Mayo, begrudged Leitrim their finest hour.
